Washers and other articles having flat surfaces cannot be processed in this way unless they can be mixed with irregularly shaped articles, but even then rejects occur. In order to avoid imposing too heavy a load on the wet cleaning processes it may be advisable to remove most of the oil in a vapour liquor apparatus using trichlorethylene or similar solvent.
If this is a frequent problem it is better to use a wider anodizing bath and to arrange an extra row of cathodes down the centre. By this method two rows of work can safely be treated. In recent years increasing use has been made of C-clamps made in plastics of a grade that will withstand cleaning, etching, anodizing, colouring and sealing. They are unsuitable for operation in chemical polishing solutions. The C-clamp holds the work firmly against an aluminium or titanium bar. They do not need stripping as their function is purely mechanical and they do not conduct any of the anodizing current.
The films produced in strong solutions tend to be more porous, softer and more flexible than those produced in weak ones. A good general-purpose electrolyte is one having an acid strength of 15% by weight. Some confusion can arise, as strength may be specified by volume, weight or density. A conversion table for the most frequently quoted units is given in Appendix I. For a given acid concentration the density will change as the bath ages, due to the increase in aluminium content, and the voltage required to produce a chosen current density will also increase.
