After flight training, he became designated as a naval aviator in 1970. From 1972 to 1973, during the Vietnam War, he flew more than 100 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Bolden was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate in 1980 and he entered the astronaut corps in August of the following year. He became the second African American to pilot a space shuttle (FREDERICK DREW GREGORY was the first) with the launch of STS-61C, the space shuttle Columbia on January 12, 1986.

A brilliant student, Bouchet was nominated to Phi Beta Kappa in 1874, but because the Yale chapter of Phi Beta Kappa had been deactivated he was not officially elected until the chapter’s reactivation in 1884. D. in physics from Yale in 1876 with a dissertation titled Measuring Refractive Indices. D. from an American college or university. Despite his degree Bouchet was unable to find a position at any college, university, or research facility. In 1876, he accepted a teaching position at the Institute for Colored Youths in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
